The chief responsibilities of the Israel State Archives Information Systems and Technology Department are the ongoing administration and constant development of the organization's IT systems, while at the same time laying the groundwork for future IT and information systems.
Consequently, Department objectives include:
1. Providing high level services to the Israel State Archives through the Archives infrastructure system and its core application ("Matmon"; literally both "treasure" and "cache").
2. Improving service to researchers and the general public, providing easier access to the treasures of the heritage of the State of Israel stored in the Archives.
3. Bringing about a significant (quantum) leap in the contribution of the computer system in order to improve the Israel State Archives' ability to fulfill its national tasks.
4. Improving the reliability, survivability and disaster-recovery capabilities of the Israel State Archives' computer system.
The chief tasks of the Department, in addition to maintenance of the existing IT system, are:
1. Finding short-term solutions for managing and maintaining electronic records and receiving electronic input from government institutions;
2. Preparing a strategic plan for computerization in the Israel State Archives, which will prepare the infrastructure for managing electronic records in Israel and which will address the function of the Archives as a central body providing guidance for all public archives in the country.
