Our Publications

Preface

About the series
This publication on Israel-Greece relations is the first of the electronic publications in the "Documents on the Foreign Policy of Israel" series to be published by the Israel State Archives on the website of the Archives.

The series on the Internet is a continuation of the series of volumes under the same name which the Israel State Archives has published since 1979. (For further information about the first series, see
State Documents Department and Our Publications).

From now on most of the series will appear as electronic volumes only, while selected publications will also appear as printed books. The editors' decision to focus on electronic volumes stemmed from the desire to make the series accessible to a wider audience, to speed up publishing time and to take advantage of the possibilities offered by this method, such as inclusion of a larger selection of documents, inclusion of documents previously not selected because of their length (such as minutes of meetings), the attachment of scanned copies of the original documents alongside the printed ones and access to an on-line search engine.

Certain changes will be made in the electronic publication as compared with the printed volumes. These include a much larger selection of documents, provision of links from the printed documents to scanned copies of the original document, a reduction in the number of footnotes and editorial notes etc. Indexes of persons or subjects will no longer be included. The Companion Volume in English, which included summaries of the Hebrew documents and translations of the notes and indexes, will be replaced by an English introduction and an expanded list of documents.

The electronic volumes to be published will deal with Israel's foreign relations between 1961 and 1967, focusing on Israel's relations with various states or groups of states. The publication appearing here, "Israel-Greece relations, 1961–1967", is the first part of a volume on "Israel's Relations with Iran and the Eastern Mediterranean States, 1961–1967".

The following publications are currently in preparation:
*In the framework of the volume on "Israel's Relations with Iran and the Eastern Mediterranean States,1961–1967": the sections on Israel's relations with Cyprus and Turkey.

*In the framework of the volume on "Israel's Relations with Western Europe,1961–1967": the sections on Israel's relations with the Federal Republic of Germany and with France.

*The volume on "Israel's Relations with Africa, 1961–1967".

Since this is the first electronic publication in the series, it will also serve as a pilot project. All comments from readers will be gratefully received. Please write to Hagai@archives.gov.il

About the publication
This publication consists of an introduction, list of documents and 36 documents (in Hebrew) dealing with a variety of subjects connected with Israel-Greece relations between 1961 and 1967. The introduction and list of documents have been translated into English.

The list of documents consists of a heading giving the name and title of the sender and the addressee, the place of residence of the sender and the addressee, the date and the reference to the file where the document was found. A short summary of the content of each document has been added. The Hebrew list of documents includes a link to the printed document and to a scanned copy of the original document.

The documents appearing in the publication are a limited selection of the documents dealing with Israel-Greece relations in 1961–1967. The editors are entirely free to use their discretion in selecting and editing the documents and no political or personal restrictions were placed on their work, except for considerations of individual privacy or material likely to cause damage to Israel's security or its foreign relations. Most of the documents come from the files of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs kept in the Israel State Archives, but the editors also made use of material from other record groups in the Archives, stenographic records of government meetings, proceedings of the Knesset (parliament) etc.
